Development of a Registry of Environmental Information

Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) is mandated by law, through the Environmental Management Act (EMA) Number 12 of 2011 (The Environmental Management Act, 2011, 2011.), to develop and maintain a Registry of Environmental Information (REI). The design and development of the REI in direct response to “Component 2 - Enhancing Institutional capacity to strengthen environmental governance and compliance” of the Zambia Mining and Environment Remediation and Improvement project (ZMERIP), ZEMA requires the design and development of a REI, that will provide free and open access to information to its stakeholders, via the Internet and the ZEMA Intranet (Development of Registry of Environmental Information, 2020.).

The main aim of this project is to design and implement a Web-based REI platform for facilitating the following:
• Public access to a list of the Acts, statutory instruments, international environmental agreements to which Zambia is a party, and any policies, plans, guidelines, studies, reports, decisions, recommendations and other publications relating to the environment published by the Agency, the Minister or the Government
• Public access to a list of every environmental management strategy and environmental management strategy review report issued by any Ministry
• Public access to all “State of the Environment” reports and “National Environmental Action Plans”
• Public access to all National Waste Management Strategies
• Public access to a list of each application for a licence or approval under this Act
• Public access to a list of each licence, order and approval issued under this Act
• Public access to details of all charges laid and convictions entered for contravention of this Act
